Proctor’s Ledge is a somber memorial at the site where 19 Salem residents were hanged in 1692. The names of all 19 innocent victims killed are inscribed on stone plaques. In July five women, the first of the 19 women and men, were hanged from a tree, then dropped into a crevice and loosely covered with soil. Those accused of practicing witchcraft and executed were not allowed a Christian burial. Some have said that grieving family members came after dark to retrieve the bodies of their loved ones. They could be heard crying quietly as they went about the heartbreaking task of recovering bodies.

The house was built on ground wrongfully seized from its rightful owner, Matthew Maule, by Colonel Pyncheon, the founder of the Massachusetts branch of the family. According to legend, at the time of his death Maule laid a curse upon the Pyncheon family. During the housewarming festivities, Colonel Pyncheon was found dead in his armchair; whether he actually died from the curse or from a congenital disease is unclear. His portrait remains in the house as a symbol of its dark past and the weight of the curse upon the spirit of its inhabitants. Think morning-to-night festivities punctuated by raucous moments and jaw-dropping creativity. There are ways around the lack of parking and long waiting lines at popular venues.
Halfway down a by-street of one of our New England towns stands a rusty wooden house, with seven acutely peaked gables, facing towards various points of the compass, and a huge, clustered chimney in the midst. The street is Pyncheon Street; the house is the old Pyncheon House; and an elm-tree, of wide circumference, rooted before the door, is familiar to every town-born child by the title of the Pyncheon Elm. Matthew Maule cast some sort of spell on her that rendered her under his control. While in a trance, Alice Pyncheon claimed that she knew the secret to the eastern land. Alice Pyncheon died from illness some time later when Matthew Maule ordered her to serve his fiancee and caused her to walk home in the rain. As Holgrave finishes his story, he realizes he has hypnotized Phoebe, but his integrity prevents him from abusing his power, and he wakes her from her trance. The Judge explains that Clifford knows the location of their late uncle’s inheritance.
Even Phoebe’s presence cannot free Clifford and Hepzibah from the terror inspired by a visit from their cousin, Judge Pyncheon. He greets Hepzibah warmly and offers her financial support, but she furiously blocks the Judge’s way into the house, while, from inside, Clifford begs him to go away. Even the normally unflappable Phoebe experiences a moment of revulsion when the Judge greets her.
